It's that time of year again! The Department of Defense's Cyber Crime Center (
DC3) is about to start their third-annual
Forensic Challenge!
The first year had a series of challenges, ranging from image analysis to cryptography and data recovery from damaged media. The second year was very media and cryptography intense. (My team solved one media challenge, the image challenge, and parts of two other challenges. Yes, you get points for partial credit.)
This year's challenge looks like it will have a wider variety of puzzles, tiered into four different skill levels.
Even though I'm not sure how much time I will have, I've signed up again! Last year, I really wanted to devote a good amount of time to the challenges, but I ended up only devoting a few days to each puzzle. While I don't think I will have as much time this year, I am still looking forward to it.
In any case, it is not too late to sign up! If you have any kind of interest in computer security, then I strongly recommend trying out the forensic challenge.
Finally: I am issuing a formal challenge. For the last two years, my team has had a higher score than every government and military team. So this year, I challenge all government and military teams to beat whatever score I get. This is about ego and skillz, so who is up to the challenge?
